In 2019 I made a New Years Resolution to read 25 books. When I was younger, I was an avid reader. Unfortunately, both age and the time constraints that come with University and working adult life meant that I had largely given up leisurely reading. Sadly, much of this time was swapped with watching the newest Netflix series or mindlessly thumbing my way through Instagram.
I think at some point I recognized the book-shaped void that was left after I had stopped reading just for fun. I remembered the joy I felt when picking up a new, fresh book for the first time and the intoxication that occurred from a read that was so engaging you couldn’t put it down. So I decided that 2019 was going to be my year of rediscovering reading.
I achieved my Resolution and managed to find some time most nights to read a few pages. By December, I was even chipping away at my 28th book, exceeding my pre-defined goal. Throughout the year I read both fiction and non-fiction. Perhaps one of these days I will write a list of my favourite all-time books, but for the purpose of this article, I’m going to speak to the business books that had a huge impact on me.
I view the following books as a form of therapy. They act as wise words that are there to guide you during times of uncertainty, and help you recognize ideas and theories that you didn’t even realize you cared about.
The best thing about these books was that at some point throughout them, I saw myself so, so clearly. I was able to fit myself into the narrative in a way that was almost frightening. It was truly like I was sitting there with my own personal business coach or therapist and they were guiding me throughout the fear and excitement of business ownership.
So, with that, I hope that these books have the same effect on you. I hope they bring you clarity, joy, hope and perseverance. Life can be tough and confusing, and sometimes we just need some wise female wisdom to guide us through
If you don’t read past this title, to be honest, I’m okay with it. There’s a reason why this is my absolute #1 book recommendation. Playing Big forces you to confront the longing you feel to live a life filled with happiness, purpose and fulfillment. It causes you to recognize the strength you have within, and confront the fears you have of making big, actionable moves head-on. This is one of the only books that I can truly say I would read again and again and again. Please, just read it.
If you’ve never heard of Rachel Hollis, do yourself a favour and go follow her on any and all social media sites. She will give you the daily dose of ‘kick in the but’ that you need to get your life in order and pursue your audacious dreams.
This is one of three books in the “You are a Badass” series by Jen Sincero. I’ve read all three and this one spoke to me the most. She talks about the idea of creating the financial reality that you want and deserve in a way that you can control and manifest. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I hear the word “manifest” and my mind immediately slips to “hokey”. But I promise, the wisdom in this book won’t disappoint you. You will be forced to recognize that there are millions of dollars out there just waiting for you to grab them, all you have to do is believe that they are yours for the taking. Intrigued? I sure hope so.
Honestly, this book is just straight up practical. Everyone needs some help once in a while when it comes to turning off Netflix and getting the important work done. The author goes through some super interesting research on how to form effective lifelong habits that will help you achieve long-term success.
Okay, so there you have it - my top 4 2019 must-reads for female entrepreneurs. My goal this year is to read a whopping 40 books, so stay tuned for more epic reads.
